With over 500 volunteers who donate more than 70,000 hours a year, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden recently held its Volunteer Appreciation Brunch.
Mrs. Helene Pancoast, the granddaughter of Dr. David Fairchild, was recognized for her lifetime involvement at Fairchild. A Coconut Grove resident, Mrs. Pancoast was given a rare ginger, which was recently collected by Fairchild Garden Director Dr. Carl Lewis on the Indonesian island of Halmahera.
Dr. Fairchild was visiting that part of the world, and was looking forward to exploring Halmahera, when the war in the Pacific broke out and he had to leave.
Three volunteers were given the 2012 Bertram Zuckerman Volunteer of the Year award at the March 14 event.
