Hundreds of butterflies were released at the recent dedication of a new butterfly garden at St. Thomas Episcopal Parish School as the schoolchildren cheered them on.
The junior preschool, senior preschool and kindergarten children of the school were in attendance May 23 as the new garden was dedicated. The garden is the gift of the Hilda Bacardi family as part of the school’s environmental science curriculum and the school’s current capital campaign effort
“Beyond the sheer joy you get when finding a butterfly in a beautiful garden like this,” Ms. Bacardi says, “butterfly gardening also can teach our children about the life cycle of insects, and about caring for plants and their environment.”
The garden will play a key role in the school’s environmental science program, which includes an organic garden and the development of a natural wetlands area on the school campus.
