Man suspected of putting UM student in coma will be sent back to Miami

A man charged with causing a hit-and-run that sent a University of Miami student into a coma is is scheduled to return to Miami Tuesday night.

Luis Felipe Moya-Lopez, 24, was arrested at an apartment in New York after police tracked him down.

Moya-Lopez fled the scene of a crash on April 27, which put 19-year-old Eliza Gresh in a coma, according to South Miami police. Gresh was crossing South Dixie Highway at SW 57th Avenue when a silver Mercedes-Benz E-320 slammed into her and fled the scene, according to the police report. She was taken to Kendall Regional Medical Center.

Investigators from the South Miami Police Department and the Miami Police Department tracked down Moya Lopez’ mother and girlfriend.

His mother was arrested when she took the Mercedes to a body shop for repairs.

Authorities learned Moya-Lopez fled Florida within a week of the crash. He was arrested on June 5.
