Coral Gables police were investigating why a man fired a gun Monday inside a hotel near the University of Miami campus.

No one was hurt, police said. But the incident did lead to UM blasting out an alert to students and employees.

The shot was fired shortly before 6:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn at 1350 S. Dixie Hwy. According to police, a man inside a room fired a gun, then reported it to authorities.

“Never was anyone on the loose,” police spokesman Officer Dean Wellinghoff said.

Nobody was hurt. The shot hit the glass but didn’t penetrate it, Wellinghoff said.

Why did the man fire the gun? Police were still investigating that, Wellinghoff said. Officers had the man at the police station Monday night. Charges were pending.

UM students and employees learned about the event after the university sent out an alert saying, “A DANGEROUS SITUATION has been confirmed NEAR CORAL GABLES CAMPUS.”

It went to tell people on campus to “seek shelter immediately in a secure location and await further instruction.”

Shortly before 7:30 p.m., and UM sent out another alert saying “ALL CLEAR.”
