Lawmaker to hold meeting on FPL powerlines on U.S. 1

Residents will have a chance to voice their thoughts on Florida Power & Light’s proposal to place high-voltage transmission lines along U.S. 1 at a town hall Monday night.

State Rep. José Javier Rodríguez, D-Miami, is hosting the town hall from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Coral Gables Museum, 285 Aragon Ave.

The issue has stirred up unrest across the county, as FPL wants to build 80- to 100-foot-tall power lines. FPL has says the lines are necessary in advance of an future expansion of the nuclear power plant at Turkey Point.

The matter is now in the hands of Gov. Rick Scott and his Cabinet, who have the final decision-making power on which route is chosen. A decision could be made soon.

“If built, such transmission lines will impact our community,” reads the invitation from Rodríguez. “Please come and allow your voice to be heard.”
